Today’s first news worthy item I read about is happening in Pilsen, IL as we speak. It seems that residents in that community are protesting the building of a metal shredding and recycling facility because
of the possible dangers it presents to the community. Now, I am all for recycling and doing the right thing for the earth but I think there comes a time when you have to really look at the opportunity cost of such a decision. In terms of job creation this is a no brainer, however in terms of community safety is it worth it? In my estimation most accidents such as explosions at plants are most likely from common human error but with environmental and safety guards put into place these can be prevented. I firmly believe that human error is behind many of these tragic events, so the question then is how are we training these people to prevent these accidents from occurring? I understand the residents concerns, but my opinion is that job creation leads to more education within a community. After all isn’t that what makes America the place it is?
I don’t want to read to much into it with my opinions, but let me know what you think and how this can help their economy and community. You can read the full story by clicking here.
