RALEIGH, N.C. – VMZINC®-US, the international brand name of rolled zinc products, has announced that the company received two 2015 Design Awards from Metal Architecture for its work on the Newport Beach Civic Center in Newport Beach, California and the Principal Riverwalk Pavilion and Pump Station in Des Moines, Iowa. As a 2015 winner, both projects will be featured in the July issue of Metal Architecture.
VMZINC® received the Judges Award for its innovative and creative use of zinc that elevated the overall design of the Newport Beach Civic Center and accompanying parking structure. National architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson designed the facility, which was completed in May 2013. It includes an 88,000-square-foot city hall, with zinc architectural features that helped the building earn the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Level Certification. The adjacent 155,000-square-foot parking structure encompasses 450 parking spaces, providing free parking for city hall, library and park visitors, as well as city vehicles and staff. The exterior of the building was built with VMZ PIGMENTO blue flat lock panels.
For its work on the Principal Riverwalk and Pump Station in Des Moines, Iowa, VMZINC® received the Grand Award. Initially, Substance Architecture designed the 1,950-square-foot Riverwalk Pavilion, shrouded in black VMZ ANTHRA-ZINC standing seam panels, as a stand-alone structure. However, designs for the Pump Station were created in response to the major 2008 Iowa Flood. The 3,485-square-foot Pump Station has a similar zinc skin that conceals pumps, valves and generators for use during flood events. Combined, these two award-winning buildings, completed in January 2013, define the public plaza on the west bank of the Des Moines River.
