RALEIGH, N.C., July 25, 2016 – VMZINC® -US, an international leader in innovative zinc products, has announced that the Gemma Observatory project has been recognized as the 2016 Metal Architecture grand award winner, and winner in the natural metals category. The Metal Architecture Design Awards represent a great spread of creativity in the metal construction industry, showcasing exciting uses of metal that take design to the next level.
Anmahian Winton Architects used VMZINC®‘s QUARTZ-ZINC Flat lock panels to design the Gemma Observatory, a private building located on a remote summit in New Hampshire. Completed in November 2015, the 1,200-square-foot building borrows unique features from its surrounding landscape. Anmahian Winton Architects used 3,500 square feet of 1-mm-thick VMZ Flat lock panels in QUARTZ-ZINC to wrap the exterior cladding around the building. An unconventional pattern of lock-seamed zinc cladding mediates between the irregular site topography and the building’s geometry. The choice of cladding—its dimension and color—produces a material relationship to the gray granite projections that characterize the summit.
VMZINC®‘s QUARTZ-ZINC Flat lock panels create a wall cladding system, using overlapped metal panels to achieve a nearly flat appearance. Not only do these panels demonstrate aesthetic qualities, the system’s application exhibits functional qualities as well. The system acts as a rain screen, whose materials are weather resistant, with ventilated wall cladding installed over a waterproofing membrane. Over time natural weathering will allow the zinc to patina, subsequently darkening the color of the panels to closely resemble the building’s surroundings.
As a 2016 winner, the Gemma Observatory project has been featured on the cover and in the July issue of Metal Architecture magazine, the leading authority on the use of metal in architectural applications and building design. It seeks to educate architects, design professionals and engineers engaged in new construction, retrofit, renovation and the modernization of buildings.
