Chance to meet acclaimed architect Yann Weymouth at METALCON 2021

Constructed in steel and glass, the “Enigma,” is the focal point of The Dalí’s new state-of-the-art building designed by world-renowned architect Yann Weymouth. St. Petersburg, Florida, is home to The Dalí Museum and sits directly across the bay from the Tampa Convention Center, home of METALCON 2021. The Museum is recognized internationally by the Michelin Guide with a three-star rating, deemed “one of the top buildings to see in your lifetime” by AOL Travel News, and named one of the ten most interesting museums in the world by Architectural Digest.

South Florida Architecture says, “The building’s exterior consists of 1,062 triangular pieces of 18-inch thick hurricane-proof walls, protruding a giant free-form geodesic glass bubble known as the ‘Enigma.’ The Enigma stands at a towering 75 feet tall, a tribute to the dome that replicates Dali’s museum in Spain. Inside of the museum, your eye is captured by another architectural feature – a helical staircase – reminding all visitors of Dali’s fascination with the double-helical formation of the DNA molecule.”

In an interview with AliveTampaBay, Weymouth explains how the “Enigma” was constructed. He said “No two triangular pieces are the same. The steel was cast in India, then sent to Germany and the United States to be shaped just perfectly; each bar is a different length and each angle is slightly different then put together and then the glass was bolted in.”

Yann Weymouth’s career as architect spans five decades and three continents. He has successfully led designs of large-scale and complex projects for Pei Cobb Freed, Arup, SOM, Arquitectonica, HOK and now at Harvard Jolly Architecture. His architectural work has required a deepening understanding of materials, particularly concrete, metal and glass to innovatively resolve sometimes complex functional and aesthetic goals. Throughout his career, he has used steel, aluminum, and glass to create luminous, transparent forms to contrast with the solid opacity of concrete & stone. In addition to The Dali, he is known for his work as chief of design for I.M. Pei on the Grand Louvre Project in Paris and for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
