Why Design and Build with Metal – The Most Sustainable Construction Material Available

The growing demand for more innovative sustainable design strategies and generating on-site renewable energy leads designers and owners to metal as the most sustainable building material available. Metal is durable, long-lasting, attractive and more versatile than ever.  Metal has long been overlooked due to common beliefs and myths. However, because of metal’s extended service life, low consumption of natural resources and recyclability, it is the best choice to achieve the architecture “2030 Challenge.” Designing with metal as a foundation for renewable energy will achieve net zero goals faster and cost-effectively.  This panel presentation includes speakers who encompass a variety of metal building design and construction specialties. Together, they will provide insights on common myths and discuss trends in design, construction and sustainability using metal, including a discussion on the impact of extreme weather conditions on building material selection.

This session is FREE to attend and will be located in The Sustainability Learning Center inside the Expo Hall. Availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and space is limited.

Shelly Higgins
Architectural & National Accounts Director, S-5!

Shelly joined S-5! in 2018 with a successful career in the building industry stemming from design work, architectural sales and representing manufacturers since 1989. Today, she creates, manages and provides training through AIA CES presentations and manages the architectural specification programs.  Her vast experience gives her a perspective and understanding of the various roles and expectations of the people with whom she interacts. She actively participates in industry organizations and trade shows. Her passion has always been working, learning, teaching and sharing knowledge in the construction industry.  She is currently operating a construction camp for girls in NE Ohio for the second year with the help of various industry associations and trade unions.  Together they encourage junior and high school girls to consider a career in the construction industry.

Frank Stasiowski, FAIA
CEO, PSMJ Resources, Inc.

Frank Stasiowski is an advisor to CEOs and other leaders at many of the world’s top architecture and engineering firms. Additionally, he actively serves as an outside director for architectural and engineering firms around the globe, and Frank’s experience includes serving as a director for a publicly-traded, 4,000-person engineering firm. Frank helps his clients by challenging them to excel and to think differently about their constraints and obstacles. He sees his role as one of guiding firm leaders through a perspective that may not come naturally to them. He views success ultimately as clients not simply following his recommendation, but rather making their own decisions guided by his insight. Frank is a prolific author, writing hundreds of articles for the Professional Services Management Journal and numerous books intended for architecture and engineering firm leaders, including his best-sellers The Value Pricing Imperative for Design Firms, Impact 2020, and Impact 2030. As an international speaker to audiences from five to more than 5,000, Frank is well-known for his data-driven (and a bit daring) look into the future of the business of architecture and  engineering. His energetic and down-to-earth speaking style always draws rave reviews. Among the areas where Frank brings particular expertise as an advisor, facilitator, and speaker are strategic planning, transition planning, and mergers & acquisitions. In addition to his advisory work, Frank spends a significant amount of his time delivering presentations and facilitating meeting discussions, planning retreats, workshops, and training sessions all with the goal of dramatically improving the business performance of A/E/C organizations worldwide. Rob Haddock
CEO and Founder, S-5!

Rob is a metal roofing expert who has worked in the industry for five decades―as a laborer, then contractor, forensic consultant, technical author, educator, innovator, and CEO and founder of S-5! He is a member of NRCA, ASHRAE, ASCE, CSI and ASTM and a lifetime honorary member of MBCEA and MCA.  Rob holds 60+ patents and innovated the concept of seam clamps to attach roof accessories to standing seam roof profiles.  He has served as faculty for the Roofing Industry Educational Institute, the Roof Consultants Institute and the University of Wisconsin. Rob is a recipient of numerous awards and was a charter inductee to the Metal Construction Hall of Fame. His presentations and technical writings have been translated and published in at least 10 languages, yet he is a down-to-earth, hands-on speaker who has a knack for making technical subjects easy for his audience to understand. 

Tom Smith, AIA, RRC, F.SEI
FEMA Consultant, TLSMith Consulting, Inc.

Mr. Smith is a forensic architect and registered roof consultant. He is a subject matter expert on roof systems and wind performance of buildings. He has designed and performed forensic investigations of metal roof systems located in a variety of climates, from Alaska’s Arctic coast and Aleutian Islands to the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands. He has served on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) subcommittee on wind loads (ASCE 7) since 1990. He has performed building performance research investigations after 16 hurricanes and 6 tornado outbreaks. For most of these investigations, he was a member of Mitigation Assessment Teams deployed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He has coauthored 13 wind design guides, including ASCE’s Prestandard for Performance-Based Wind Design. He received the Carl G. Cash Award from ASTM International in 2013 for his body of work regarding wind damage investigations. Also, in 2013 he was promoted to Fellow grade membership of ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) for his many years of service on the ASCE 7 Wind Loads Task Committee, and for his body of work regarding wind damage investigations and wind design guides.

Dick Davis
VP & Sr. Engineering Technical Specialist, FM Global

Dick received a B.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering from Lowell Tech and an M.S., Civil/Structural Engineering w/emphasis in Fire Protection, from Worcester Polytech. He has been an adjunct professor at Worcester Polytech and Northeastern University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection and in Structural Engineering. He has worked for FM Global and legacy FM Engineering and Research for 49 years. He is author of a number of their data sheets related to wind, roof collapse, solar panels and fire. He worked with AISI and MBMA during the development of the “Base Test Method” for gravity loads on standing seam roofs (SSR) supported by cold-formed purlins. He has been involved with numerous wind uplift tests of SSR, with and without external seam clamps (ESC, or wind clamps). He is a Charter Member of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a Life Member of ASCE and has served on the ASCE 7 Wind Load Subcommittee for the last 3 cycles. He recently served as task committee chair for the chapter on roof mounted equipment and other structures. He is currently serving on the ASCE Solar Manual of Practice Committee. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and serves on several of its committees. He is a Fellow in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) international and served 11 years on its Board of Directors, including a term as President. He serves on the Exam Development Committee in Fire Protection Engineering for SFPE and NCEES.

Jeff Hock
Technical Director, Sheffield Metals

Jeff Hock currently serves as the Technical Director for Sheffield Metals International. Jeff brings over 17 years of standing seam metal roofing experience and technical installation knowledge to his current role where he focuses on overseeing the Technical and Architectural Departments within Sheffield Metals. He is also actively involved with the Metal Construction Association via the Board of Directors and chairs the MCA Roofing Council. Before becoming involved in the metal roofing industry, Jeff served eight years in the U.S. Navy.
