Come visit a true and experienced BI-METAL fastener manufacturer.
Through the years increasing efficiency has continued to be one of the crucial issues in all industries. In the construction industry a game changer was the invention of self-drilling screws, which heavily influenced and shortened the work process.
However, some metals are too soft for drilling and cannot be hardened. This goes for austenitic stainless steel, e.g. A2 or A4, which is considered the primary stainless steel type. Other stainless steel types can be hardened, like the 400 series, but this can create problems with corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.
By combining austenitic stainless steel with carbon steel in one fastener, it is possible to avoid the hardening of stainless steel and still manufacture a self-drilling screw.
The hardened carbon steel part (drill point and thread) will then do the drilling and tapping of thread into steel and the stainless steel part will go into the application and form the permanent fixing.
The making of bimetal fasteners can be simplified into four steps
1. Joining a piece of stainless steel and carbon steel wire
2. Cold forging the screw with head, drill point and thread
3. Partially hardening of the carbon steel part, meaning the drill point and the first couple of threads
4. The finishing touch: Surface treatment
