If temperature differences can be kept low, heat transfer (flow) is also kept low. If the temeprature difference, sometimes called "Delta T ', equals zero, then zero heat flow occurs. Using this approach zero heat flow conditions have been witnessed even when large temperature differences existed between the spaces. Traditional insulation materials, would require an infinite amount of "R" Value to accomplish.
Phase Change Materials do a strange and amazing thing. They do not change temperataure during the change of phase from solid to liquid or vice versa. Water a common phase change material, has the ability to hold 1 BTU of heat energy per pound per degree F. In the solid phase, (ice) it also has the same ability to hold 1 BTU per pound per degree F. The strange and wonderful thing is that during the change of phase, water gives up 144 BTUs before it can pass from 32 degree liquid to 31 degree solid ice. This is 143 times the amount of btus it takes to change the temeprature by 1 degree, at all other temperatures. This massive amount of heat storage and release, only occurs at the phase change temperature. It is this characteristic of PCM's that we have seized upon.
